Algérie a perdu un grand artiste” avec le décès de Rachid Taha, estime mercredi Oussama, fonctionnaire de 24 ans. Pourtant, dans les rues d’Alger, certains, surtout les plus jeunes, ne le connaissent pas ou peu.
Mais pour Oussama, qui se dit “très touché” par sa mort, “même ceux qui ne savent pas qui c’est le reconnaissent quand ils écoutent ses chansons”.
Né près d’Oran, à Sig, Rachid Taha a quitté l’Algérie à 10 ans, en 1968, pour la France, où il fera sa vie.
Enfant du rock et du punk, il n’a jamais oublié ses racines algériennes, et associera à ces genres des sonorités orientales notamment celles du raï, né au début du XXe siècle dans la région d’Oran, qui s’est modernisé et exporté dans les années 1980 et 1990.
En sortant en 1998 son album Diwan de reprises “chaâbi”, Rachid Taha a aussi fait connaître à travers le monde ce genre musical algérois, dont le nom signifie “populaire” en arabe.
Sa reprise de “Ya Rayah”, chanson dédiée aux émigrés du maître chaâbi Dahmane El Harrachi, connaît un succès international.
“Il a révolutionné (…) la chanson de Dahmane El Harachi, on l’écoute dans le monde entier. Dans toutes les boîtes (de nuit) du monde, on écoute encore +Ya Rayah+”, souligne Naamane, 40 ans, salarié dans l’événementiel.
“Il a laissé sa trace et tout le monde lui en est reconnaissant”, poursuit-il.
Certains Algérois apparaissent toutefois peu touchés, semblant considérer le chanteur comme un artiste surtout français.
Rachid Taha, qui se disait “Algérien pour toujours, Français pour tous les jours”, a peu joué en Algérie. Il y était revenu après 20 ans d’absence pour une tournée en 2006.
Mais pour Naamane, Taha “a su aussi faire le lien entre les Algériens de l’autre côté (de la Méditerranée) et ceux d’ici”.
“On sent qu’on a perdu un artiste de chez nous et ça fait mal”, abonde Sihem, doctorante en littérature française âgée d’une vingtaine d’années.
Pour Imen, enseignante de 25 ans, “le fait qu’il soit issu justement de l’immigration, de l’entre-deux, c’est une richesse, c’est un plus”.
“Ce n’est pas quelque chose qu’il a forcément mis en avant, mais c’est quelque chose qui est toujours là, qui apparait de façon subtile dans son oeuvre”, ajoute-t-elle.
Rachid Taha avait notamment repris “Douce France” de Charles Trenet, avec son premier groupe Carte de Séjour, mais aussi adapté avec des rythmes orientaux “Rock The Casbah” de The Clash.
Mercredi soir, le ministère algérien de la Culture n’avait pas encore réagi à son décès.
Quand à l’agence de presse d’Etat APS, après avoir annoncé son décès, elle a publié une dépêche titrée “Le monde la culture en France pleure Rachid Taha et exprime sa tristesse”.
