MONDE/POLITIQUE : Droits de l’Homme : les élus américains adoptent des sanctions contre l’Arabie saoudite
La Chambre des représentants a adopté ce lundi deux mesures visant à lutter contre les violations des droits de l’Homme en Arabie saoudite, notamment une loi imposant des sanctions à ceux qui ont ordonné ou commis l’assassinat du journaliste saoudien Jamal Khashoggi, rapporte ce lundi le journal américain The Washington Post.
La chambre basse du Congrès américain a ainsi voté à l’unanimité une résolution condamnant l’Arabie saoudite pour la détention et les abus soupçonnés à l’encontre de militantes pour les droits humains ayant protesté contre les restrictions imposées aux femmes saoudiennes les empêchant de conduire ou voyager sans tuteur.
La Chambre des représentants a également adopté à écrasante majorité la « Loi Khashoggi », à 405 voix pour et 7 voix contre, un texte qui impose au directeur du renseignement américain d’identifier les auteurs de l’assassinat contre Khashoggi et refuser ou retirer des visas américains à ces individus.
Les mesures adoptées par l’organe législatif américain risquent cependant de rencontrer le même sort que des mesures similaires adoptées dans un passé récent qui se sont toutes heurtées au président américain Donald Trump, farouche soutien de la famille royale saoudienne et du prince héritier Mohamed Ben Salmane.
L’an dernier, le sénat américain avait adopté une mesure visant à forcer le président Trump à identifier et sanctionner les responsables impliqués dans la mort de Khashoggi. Trump n’a donné aucune suite à cette mesure, malgré l’obligation légale de répondre au bout de 120 jours.V
